Where do you live and what is your family's origin?
I live in Japan, just outside of Tokyo at the moment, although I am known to be a bit nomadic these days. I am a 100% Japanese, lived most of my life in Tokyo and its suburbs.
Where do you get your culinary inspiration from?
From anywhere and everywhere, really - seasonal produce or exotic ingredients I'd see at store, restaurant dishes I've eaten (or those I'd see in a magazine, even), food magazine and cookbooks, and of course fellow food bloggers.
Why did you start blogging?
I first started blogging in Japanese in 2003 while living in Hawaii as a way of keeping my friends and families updated on my life abroad. Then I launched the English one so I'd get more involved in the world of food blogging fast expanding back then.
Whats your favorite thing about cooking?
It's hard to single out one or two things, but I think it is great that cooking can be highly creative and almost 'art' while being an essentially habitual, day-to-day routine at its heart. It doesn't have to be something special, extravaganza for cooking to be an art - some fresh vegetables in season cooked in a way to bring out their best can be a work of art, and experimenting on new and different combinations of ingredients itself is a creative process. And the best thing about cooking, I think, is that all the results of cooking are to be consumed and gone... or so are they meant to be. Whether it is great or maybe not so great, it will be gone and you are left with nothing but full stomachs, happy smiles, a bit of cleaning up, and most importantly motivation to cook more... at the end of the day, if what I cook would last forever, I wouldn't want to cook one dish after another!
Besides cooking what is something you like do on your spare time?
I quite like travelling and photography, although they are taking up more of my time - not just in my spare time. photos from travelling
