  • add   1/4 teaspoon salt
  • add   1/2 cup margarine
  • add   2 eggs
  • add   3 teaspoons baking powder
  • add   1 teaspoon vanilla
  • add   1 egg yolk
  • add   1 1/2 cups sugar
  • add   1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • add   1 cup milk
  • add   2 1/4 cups cake flour
  • add   1 1/2 ounces unsweetened chocolate
  • add   1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • add   1/3 cup sugar
  • add   1/3 cup oil
  • add   1/2 cup whipping cream
  • add   1 1/2 cups milk
  • add   1 teaspoon salt
  • add   1 tablespoon flour
  • add   2 tablespoons butter
  • add   1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Beat egg whites until soft peaks form.
  2. Gradually add 1/2 cup sugar, beatinguntil very stiff peaks form.
  3. Sift together remaining dry ingredients into another bowl.
  4. Add oil, half themilk and vanilla.
  5. Beat 1 min.at med.speed.
  6. Add remaining milk and egg yolks.
  7. Beat 1 min., scrape bowl.
  8. Gently fold in egg whites.
  9. Bake in two greased 9x 1 1/2" round pans in 350degree oven for 25 min.
  10. Cool 10 min., remove from pans.
  11. Cool completely.
  12. Fillwith cream filling.
  13. Frost with Chocolate Glaze. French Custard Filling: In saucepan, combine sugar, flour, cornstarch and salt.Gradually stir in milk.
  14. Cook and stir until mixture thickens and boils; cook and stir 2-3 min.longer.
  15. Stir a little of hot mixture into egg yolk; return to hotmixture .
  16. Cook and stir until mixture just boils.
  17. Add vanilla; cool.
  18. Beat untilsmooth; fold in whipped cream.
  19. Chocolate Glaze: Melt chocolateand butter over low heat, stirring constantly.
  20. Remove from heat. Stir in confectioners' sugar and vanilla until crumbly.
  21. Blendin 3 tablespoons boiling water.
  22. Add enough water (about 2 teaspoons), a teaspoon at a time, to form med.glaze of pouring consistency.
  23. Pour quickly over top ofcake; spread glaze evenly over top and sides.
