I have made this recipe many times over the years to great reviews! They're a delcious, cake-like brownie; perfect for potlucks. They save well in the refrigerator.

  • add   Brownies:
  • add   1 cup stick margarine or butter
  • add   1 cup water
  • add   1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • add   2 cups flour
  • add   1/2 teaspoon salt
  • add   2 cups granulated sugar
  • add   1/2 cup butter milk
  • add   1 teaspoon baking soda
  • add   2 eggs
  • add   1 teaspoon real vanilla
  • add   Frosting:
  • add   1/2 cup (one stick) margarine or butter
  • add   1/3 cup buttermilk
  • add   1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • add   1 box powdered sugar
  • add   1 cup chopped nuts (optional)


  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees
  2. Bring to boil 1 cup margarine or butter, 1 cup water and 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder.
  3. Add to flour, salt and granulated sugar. Mix well with electric mixer. Then add 1/2 cup buttermilk, baking soda, eggs and vanilla. Mix until blended then pour into a greased 11 x 17 pan. (Batter will be runny) Bake for 20 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile prepare frosting by bringing to boil 1 stick margarine or butter, 1/3 cup buttermilk and 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder. Stir into 1 box powdered sugar. Add vanilla, then chopped nuts if desired.
  5. Frost brownies while they are still warm!
