  • add   coarse salt
  • add   1 egg, mixed with 2 Tbs. water
  • add   1 tsp. salt
  • add   4-1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • add   1 Tbsp. sugar
  • add   1 package active dry yeast
  • add   1-1/2 cups warm water


  1. Measure the warm water into a small bowl. Stir in the sugar and theyeast. Let stand for 5 minutes. In a large mixing bowl, add the flourand the salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and mix with a wooden spoonuntil the dough gets stiff. Sprinkle some extra flour on the counterand turn your dough out onto floured surface. Knead the dough about 20times by folding the dough over and over on itself. Place the doughback into the large bowl, cover it with a towel and let it rise in awarm place for 1 hour or until it has doubled in size. Divide thedough into 20-30 equal balls, about the size of a golf ball. Use extraflour on your hands if the dough is sticky. Roll each ball with yourhands into a log about as thick as your thumb. Shape the logs into alldifferent shapes, hearts, snails, fish, pretzels, initials - anything!Preheat the oven to temperature 400°F. Place your creations on abaking sheet. Mix the egg and water and brush each creation with theegg glaze. Sprinkle with the coarse salt and place in the oven. Bakefor 20-25 minutes until they are hard and brown. Cool on a rack. Ifyou prefer softer pretzels bake for only about 15 minutes.
