This is the most awesome Macaroni & Cheese that we have ever eaten. It is a family favorite and we have it once a week. All four of my kids request it often, and my husband thinks it's incredible. Hope you enjoy this comfort food. (Be sure to use EXTRA SHARP cheddar!)

  • add   1 lb macaroni (I prefer large elbows or medium shells)
  • add   6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • add   6 tablespoons butter or margarine (I prefer butter)
  • add   2 cups milk (I use skim)
  • add   8 - 12 ounces extra-sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • add   1 teaspoon salt
  • add   1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
  2. Cook macaroni according to package instructions.
  3. Drain, rinse and set aside.
  4. In same pot over low heat, melt the butter.
  5. Add flour, salt and pepper and whisk into melted butter until smooth.
  6. Simmer and stir until mixture thickens into a paste and is golden.
  7. Slowly add milk and whisk into butter mixture until smooth.
  8. Bring to boil and then simmer until thickened.
  9. There is no way to tell you how thick, except to say it should be thicker than gravy but not as thick as pudding.
  10. If you have made basic white sauce, you will know when it is thick enough.
  11. Remove pot from heat.
  12. Add cheddar cheese and stir until cheese starts to melt.
  13. Add macaroni and stir until coated.
  14. Pour into a 9 x 12 baking dish or 2 quart casserole.
  15. As an extra indulgence, you can sprinkle 4 oz more cheese on top.
  16. I only do this if I happen to buy a 12 oz bag or block instead of 8 oz.
  17. Bake about 20- 30 minutes, when you see top getting a bit crispy and brown.

Loved this recipe, everyone knows when you go to a buffet everyone hits up the Mac & Cheese first, this is great to make at home or even to a bbq or a work event. No matter what it is always a hit. The only prob is there is never any left overs to bring home!

This recipe was Da Bomb. I don't eat macaroni cheese, but the rest of the does. I wanted to make it homemade for them instead of the box. It was a hit with the family. Kudos to you. Thanks a mill

Very Yummy! Not much of a cook myself, but this recipe is very easy to make. Added about 1/4 tsp of Mace as well, since that's how my husband likes it. Not as many leftovers as I had planned because it was such a hit.

This is a great recipe! Thanks for adding it. I cant get away woth Box mac & cheese with the kids anymore! ive even had neighbors ask me to make it for them!

Tryed it. Liked it very much. Easy to make. I screwed up with cooking the white sauce to much 'til it resembled pizza dough. I thought it wouldn't come out right, but it did. Next time I make it, I'll be careful and I'm sure it will be grrrrrrrreat (to use the words of Tony Tiger)

Be careful when you are making the white sauce. If you cook it too long, your mac and cheese will not be creamy.
