Old Fashioned Molasses Cookies

Katie Frances making cookies/Civil war era taken to the troops in the fields. Women would move their wagons to hill top and ec evening come down to camp w fried chicken and molasses cookies. These cookes were made on wood stoves and now our fancy electric ovens. Just roll, cut and put a glaze on top. A great cookie to share your fam history as you bake. Ours will go to baby shower in heart shapes

  • add   1/3 cup brown sugar
  • add   1/3 cup shortening
  • add   1 egg
  • add   2/3 cup molasses
  • add   2 3/4cup flour
  • add   2Tbsp cinnamon
  • add   1 tsp ginger
  • add   1 tsp soda
  • add   1 tsp salt


  1. Mix shortening, brown sugar, egg, molasses thorougly. Measure flour by dipping method. Stir together flour, soda, sali, cinnamon, ginger and blend in, Chill 1 hr
  2. Heat oven to 375 degrees and roll dough out to 1/4" and cut into shapes. Put on silky pad or grease sheet, bake 8-10 min or until no imprint remains when touched . Makes 5 doz 2 1/2" cookies
  3. Icing:
  4. 1 cup confectioner's sugar
  5. 1/4 tsp salt
  6. 1/2 tsp vanilla or flavoring
  7. 1Tbsp cream or 1 tbsp water
  8. A few drops of food color
  9. Mix together all ingredients and use knife or spatula to spread thin coat on cookies, dry on rack.

Grandma had this recipe from West Virgina and it has been used for years. The story of the women and what they did to feed the troops is true and so sad, war is awful and Civil war was in families back fields so it was personal. This cookie was also used by Red Cross.
